Every summer, Aspeq welcomes interns from University programmes around the country. They are paid to work on meaningful projects that are equally valuable to Aspeq and to the students as they take the first step in their careers. Our 2024-5 interns share their reflections on their time at Aspeq:

Becca Johnston

HR student Becca is working closely with Nick to redesign Aspeq’s position description, as well as exploring AI tools, sustainability initiatives and supporting marketing projects. Nick commends Becca’s “amazing” research skills, as well as the volume and extremely high quality of the work she puts out. “I’ve enjoyed her support so much that I wish I had a permanent role available for her!,” says Nick.

Tell us about what you’re studying and why it interests you.

I have 2 papers remaining for my Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Human Resources. While working as a manager in hospitality I began to really value and enjoy the people management aspect of the role - from developing the workplace culture to advocating for compliance with employment law. I see the importance of ensuring staff are governed in a way that allows them to develop themselves as professionals while simultaneously ensuring the organization can operate productively.

Why were you keen to join Aspeq’s intern programme?

As I was nearing the end of my degree, I knew that I wanted to gain practical experience in Human Resources, so getting to work under Nick was such a fantastic opportunity. Aspeq also came with glowing reviews from a friend of mine in the Aviation industry who had both sat Aspeq exams and been given scholarships to Walsh through the company.

What are you enjoying most about your time at Aspeq?

The culture at Aspeq is unlike any other workplace I've seen - everyone has been so inclusive and friendly, and the passion people have for their roles is so clear! Getting to learn from Nick's vast experience has been equally as rewarding and insightful, I aspire to one day have the same people leadership qualities he demonstrates.

What would you like to do in your future career, and how will this internship support that?

I'd love to work in an advisory role within Human Resources, so this internship has been the first step towards getting my foot in the door in the field. This internship has provided me with so many experiences and learning opportunities regarding the "how" and "why" processes within Human Resources function as they do, which will be an invaluable asset towards furthering my career.
