Summer Internships

Jan 31, 2025

A summer internship at Aspeq gives University students meaningful and paid work experience that sets them up well for wherever they want to take their careers.

Scoring an internship as a University student is a great feeling. Even better if that internship is paid, the work you get to do is meaningful, and you’re treated like a fully-fledged and valued member of the team. Internships at Aspeq tick all these boxes and more.

People Advisor Nick Jackson leads Aspeq’s summer internship programme, which runs from November through February.

“What I love about the programme is that it delivers on our value of being ‘people people’. At Aspeq we have a commitment to investing in people, and giving students a jump start in their careers in a supportive, high-performing environment is a fantastic way to do that.”

The programme is aimed at students in their final years of University. For most interns, it’s their first taste of working in an office environment.

“We offer the experience of working for a private tech company, which is unique in Wellington where so many jobs are based around the government.”

Interns’ backgrounds are diverse and tailored to the projects Aspeq is keen for them to work on, which vary from year to year depending on the company’s priorities. Nick describes these as important, often innovative ideas that Aspeq wants to explore but often aren't able to prioritise.

“Creating a tailored work programme for each intern, which includes a meaty and meaningful project, is how we ensure that the experience is valuable for both the student and for us.”

The projects range from exploring new technologies to improving business processes, and they form the basis of the interns’ job descriptions.

Aspeq advertises internship positions on University job sites in August. When reviewing CVs and conducting interviews, Nick looks for candidates with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, high academic performance and an outgoing nature.

“We want someone who will be a really good fit with our friendly and passionate team, and will be able to work with a variety of stakeholders. While we don’t expect our interns to have mastered their field of study quite yet, we want to know they can tackle the project that we’ve created for them.”

Interns are treated as part of the team and enjoy the same perks as other Aspeq employees, including a full induction into the company, involvement in team building days and events, and wellbeing leave. Nick also encourages interns to make the most out of opportunities to learn at Aspeq.

“We pair up our interns with experienced mentors, who support them with their project and are happy to provide career advice. We really try to understand what our interns want to get out of their experience with Aspeq and how we can make that happen together.”

And while the output of their work is highly valued - Nick says many internship projects are actually implemented - equally important is the intangible contribution interns make to Aspeq’s culture.

“We love welcoming interns into our whare because they bring fresh perspectives, new ways of thinking, experiences with emerging tools and technologies, and inject lots of fun and energy into the office.”
