Aspeq Celebrates Scholarship Recipients at Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School
Aspeq is proud to continue its support of the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School, an iconic aviation training program run by Scouts Aotearoa since 1967. Held annually at Matamata Airfield, the school provides young aspiring aviators with their first exposure to flying, with many students achieving their first solo flight during the two-week program.
This year, more than 70 students participated, including 47 first-time attendees. Of these, an impressive 44 students successfully completed their first solo flight—a testament to the school's high standard of instruction. With over 1,100 air movements recorded in a single day—more than the average daily movements at London’s Heathrow Airport—the program offers an immersive aviation experience. Supporting this dynamic environment, Airways New Zealand provided a full air traffic control team with a temporary tower, and MetService meteorologists were on site to assist with weather monitoring. The New Zealand Air Force also contributed by supplying a fire crew, who thankfully spent their time assisting around the camp rather than responding to emergencies.
Aspeq’s Commitment to Aviation Training
Aspeq is committed to fostering the next generation of aviation professionals and is proud to sponsor four scholarships at Walsh each year. Three students are awarded sponsorship towards flight training, while an instructor is awarded a flight test to progress from C-Cat to B-Cat certification.
Hamish Findlay, Chief Executive of Aspeq, was honoured to attend the event and highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting young aviators: "We are thrilled to support the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School and provide these scholarships to aspiring pilots. The aviation industry relies on passionate, skilled individuals, and programs like this play a vital role in shaping the future of aviation in New Zealand. Seeing these students take their first solo flights is truly inspiring."
