Aspeq Welcomes Future Tech Leaders

Aspeq was proud to open its doors once again for ShadowTech Day, a nationwide programme that connects young women with local tech companies. This is the third year Aspeq has hosted the event, and the team's commitment to it keeps growing.

The day started with a welcome and a health and safety briefing from Nick, along with an introduction to the Aspeq team. Hamish then gave the group a look at what Aspeq actually does, from examination software to the range of industries it works with, including aviation, electrical, plumbing and midwifery.

David spoke to the students about careers in tech, covering the different paths into the industry and the subjects worth considering at school. The group then rolled up their sleeves for a project management activity with Kirsten, using Lego to work through how a project comes together in practice.

After lunch, Amie ran a session called Spot the AI, followed by Adila's look at cybersecurity and AI through video. The day wrapped up with a security exercise from Adila and Kirsten, where students worked out how to identify risks in a workplace setting.

One of this year's attendees, Jacinta, joined from Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu and later shared her thoughts on LinkedIn. She said the day gave her a much broader picture of what working in tech really means, having heard from people across product development, marketing, cybersecurity, project management, HR and client services. Jacinta said the project management activity gave her a new appreciation for how closely time, cost, resources and communication are all connected, and that the day left her keen to keep exploring where technology, business and entrepreneurship meet.

Hosting ShadowTech Day is part of Aspeq's wider commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive tech sector. The team looks forward to continuing this partnership and welcoming more students in the years ahead.
