Every summer, Aspeq welcomes interns from University programmes around the country. They are paid to work on meaningful projects that are equally valuable to Aspeq and to the students as they take the first step in their careers. Our 2024-5 interns share their reflections on their time at Aspeq:
Lia McCallum
Engineering student Lia is capturing essential business processes at Aspeq in order to ensure the knowledge is not lost. She’s turning the information she gathers into comprehensive and clear process manuals. Her engineering brain means she’s able to break down processes into their component parts, and understand how they interact with each other. Nick says he’s been particularly impressed with Lia’s ability to quickly forge trusted relationships with a range of stakeholders right across the business. “Lia has been doing amazing work for us,” says Nick.
Tell us about what you’re studying and why it interests you.
I am currently studying mechatronics engineering at the University of Canterbury. In this degree, I love how I get to do a little bit of everything in the mechanical, electrical, and software engineering fields. It broadens my perspective and helps me see the connections between different fields. What I also like about this degree is how it requires a mixture of logical and creative thinking.
Why were you keen to join Aspeq’s intern programme?
Now that I am approaching the end of my degree, I wanted to gain practical experience in a professional corporate environment before graduating. This job may not directly relate to my field of study, but I was keen to develop my problem-solving skills and learn how to effectively interact with others in a professional setting.
What are you enjoying most about your time at Aspeq?
I definitely enjoy the social events and the occasional café trips/coffee runs. I also appreciate the flexibility in how I can approach tasks, allowing me to complete them in my own way while still receiving awesome guidance. Additionally, I love the supportive team environment where it is easy to ask questions and learn from others.
What would you like to do in your future career, and how will this internship support that?
In my future career, I would like to work in either the control systems or biomedical engineering field. This internship has given me insights into the importance of creating and following processes to ensure consistency and reliability. Additionally, I have gained experience in project management and teamwork, which will be beneficial in any engineering role.
