Meet Alana Docherty - the math whizz helping make assessments fairer and smarter

Nov 4, 2025

Aspeq’s new Research and Statistical Analyst, Alana Docherty, loves uncovering stories hidden in data.

“If interrogated in the right way, data can hugely improve our ability to make decisions,” she says.

At Aspeq, Alana uses statistical analysis to examine assessment data - from how well questions perform to how long they take to answer - and identify trends or outliers that signal something’s not quite right.

“For example, if candidates consistently get a question wrong, it might mean the wording is confusing or there’s a gap in the curriculum.”

These can be flags to investigate further, leading to strong, evidence-based decision-making for Aspeq and its clients.

Alana regularly prepares reports for clients that show how their assessments are performing and highlight patterns worth a closer look.

“If clients have something they want help to know, they’re not afraid to ask and we love to help.”

Fairness is a particular passion for Alana and data can help ensure everyone gets a fair go. She adds, “We can see whether some candidates might be disadvantaged - for example, by a series of lengthy questions or even the comfort of their exam space, allowing us to explore opportunities for improvement.”

Her biggest challenge so far? Aspeq’s famously tight security.

“Our data is so secure that even I can’t access everything I’d like to! But data analysis is always a balance between privacy and information - we only collect what’s needed to give our clients meaningful insights.”

Before joining Aspeq, Alana worked at Stats NZ and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), where she discovered her niche in educational statistics.

“Working on assessments was the first time I felt a real connection to the data. I enjoyed exploring what affects student performance and what obstacles some face that others don’t. Being able to identify these issues allows us to try and make things more equitable.”

After several years at NZQA, Alana was ready for a new challenge and a move to the private sector. When she saw the role at Aspeq, it felt like the perfect fit.

“It’s exciting to be part of an organisation genuinely invested in innovation. I’m encouraged not just to share my ideas but to explore them.”

Only a few months in, she’s already sharing ideas with Aspeq’s Innovation Specialist on how to streamline workflows and improve data processes.

Alana brings that same proactive mindset to her own development. She’s currently completing a postgraduate degree in statistics at Victoria University and has joined the NZ Stats Network to connect with other professionals.

“Stats is an ever-changing field - it’s equal parts exciting and scary. Aspeq really supports professional development; we’re given generous opportunities to keep learning and growing. That’s something I love about working here.”

Outside of work, Alana channels her analytical mind into music. A clarinetist for over a decade, she has performed with the Wellington City Orchestra and in local theatre productions, most recently Pip and Shakespeare in Love.

It seems the notion that good mathematicians make good musicians certainly holds true for Alana.
